Technology New A/C’s Offer That Old Ones Don’t

Unfortunately, unlike a fine wine, air conditioners do not get better with age. Newer air conditioners on the market today may very well be vastly outperforming the old model that you’ve been hanging on to. Think of it this way: are you still using your old flip phone that you were using 10 or 15 years ago? Or have you moved on to a smartphone? Technology has changed so much in the past decade that you are likely well past due for an air conditioner upgrade. Additionally, an old air conditioner may not be as wallet-friendly as you might think. If your A/C is over 10 years old, it’s likely working inefficiently and your home may not be as cool during the hot PNW summers as you’d prefer it to be.

Read on for a look at some of the new technology being utilized on the most recent A/C models:

Eco-Friendly Refrigerant

If your air conditioner is using an R-22 refrigerant, it’s likely out of date. That type of refrigerant is being phased out by manufacturers and will become more expensive over time as supply runs low. Currently, a more eco-friendly refrigerant (R-410A) is the industry standard.

Variable-Speed Air Distribution

This technology allows for change in speeds to maintain even temperature distribution throughout your entire home. This is a key factor in keeping your entire home comfortable.

Modulating Technology
Modulating technology means that your air conditioner’s compressor can adapt to changes in ambient temperature – no more hot or cold spots! An outdated A/C will only run at one speed, while a modulating system can run with two or more speeds. Modulation provides many benefits including, consistent and even temperatures, lower energy consumption, higher efficiency, and better humidity control.

Stages of Operation
Some newer air conditioners won’t include modulating systems. However, most models do have more than one stage of operation, which also helps to increase efficiency and comfort.

Smart Thermostats

While you don’t need a new A/C to have a smart thermostat, you won’t be able to utilize all the benefits of a smart thermostat without a new A/C. Smart thermostats help to enhance the performance of your new, highly-efficient air conditioner with features like programmable temperatures, zoned systems, learned behaviors, internet connectivity, and more.
